This text on your web site regarding "open source" is misleading, please consider changing it. By cosh,  Nov 25, 2007

From www.dell.com/open:

The main thing to note is that when you choose open source you don't get a Windows® operating system.

This is the wrong impression to give, as it suggests that all open source software everywhere is somehow incompatible with Windows, whereas in reality many open source programs are ported to and available on Windows, such as Mozilla Firefox, Thunderbird, and OpenOffice, and some popular open source programs are dedicated entirely to it, for example Paint.NET (info).

A better and more accurate thing to say would be:

"The main thing to note is that when you choose an open source operating system like Ubuntu Linux®, you don't get a Windows® operating system."

or how about:

"The main thing to note is that when you purchase a Dell computer preinstalled with Ubuntu or FreeDOS, you don't get a Windows operating system" etc. etc.

Concise, clear, and accurate. If I remember correctly there's a similar message on the other language versions of the Dell web site, so it should be changed there too.

If you've a better suggestion post it in the comments.

Shop Dell PCs with Linux. Require more visibility! By yesmathew,  Jun 1, 2007

More visibility required for "Shop Dell PCs with Linux" while shopping Windows PCs!

Checked this morning at USA > Home & Home Office. Very less to no visibility on selling Linux based PCs. Unless one accidentally lands at Linux page.

Request to add links on all Windows based PC pages saying " Shop Dell PCs with Linux* "

Start an “Upgrade my Dells’ hardware” site By stroltz,  May 10, 2007

The site should automatically analyze your Dell, and the offer you upgrades that will fit. Everything from CPU, RAM, Video Card, HDD, DVD drive etc.

The parts should be at very competitive OEM prices. (Currently some Dell part pricing is unrealistically expensive, for this site to work you want it to be better than other online retailers)

Dell could even have benchmarks showing how much speed improvement your Dell would benefit from a new CPU.

As a nice touch the installation instructions for each part would be available as a direct link on that part page, so you could see how to install it in your Dell before purchase.

You could even offer a recycling service and/or cash back on the used parts. Dell ship the new part with a return envelope etc. (Just like Dell currently do on part only warranty repairs)

Dell should promote Linux better by: By mrlinux11,  Jun 5, 2007

1) Making it easier to find on the website
2) Adding back the extended hardware support (all other systems have it)
3) Some more Advertising on their website

Allow anyone to get any product in any channel (home, business, etc.) on the Dell site. By winoffice,  May 4, 2008

Sometimes Dell posts some products only in certain channels; for example home offices cannot get Vostros.

It is like saying that business users want Vostros, but nobody in, for example, a home office, would want it. But some home offices might want it. For some people in home offices, it might be exactly what they might be looking for. The same applies to all channels and all products actually.

In any case, this is extremely annoying for those who do encounter this.

An idea has been submitted and suggests that Dell merge all channels into one for simplicity. But until then Dell, please offer all products in all of your channels.

(I want to note that I posted this in an earlier post, but that was only for PCs. I decided to generalize it to all products).

Dell Mini Ubuntu (Linux) Missing Webcam By ewalk153,  Oct 4, 2008

It would be great if the Dell Mini product site would add back the webcam option for the Unbuntu Linux version of the product.

When the site first launched http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/laptop-inspiron-9 , both the 0.3 megapixel camera and the 1.3 megapixel camera were available as configuration options, but they have since been dropped from the site when ordering the linux version of the product.

Any ideas from Dell on why the change in product offering? Any chance that this will be added back in as a product configuration offering? I have to imagine that the drivers for a webcam are available, and if not, there are plenty of developers who would be interested in building them. This site lists a lot of information on getting a webcam running on a linux pc:

Clear motherboard specs By s_wel,  Jun 3, 2007

How about the specification of the motherboard included with the hardware selection process information on your Web site like:
-- Number of ram slots
-- Number of pci/ pci express slots (With pci express spec. eg. X1, X8, X16)
-- Processor slot info eg. 775, AM2

This would be useful for people buying a cheap computer in the hope of upgrading later.

CDs, please include everything or let me download it from the website By uklathemock,  Feb 17, 2007

After reformatting my e1505 to remove all the bloatware, I needed the Media Direct Reinstallation CD. Well, it took about 3 chats wiith customer service before the correct CD was finally sent. I had to provide the part number myself. :( Why not just put all the Dell software up for download? I have a high-speed connection...and it would save me a few phone calls.

Removing an option in the Ubuntu order process. By devlin,  Oct 14, 2007

I was on the configuration page for the Dell Inspiron Desktop 530 N (the Ubuntu desktop) when I noticed two things that while one was just annoying the other was just plain stupid.

1. The just plain annoying one was the banner at the top of the page where I'm configuring a LINUX system saying "Dell recommends Windows Vista® Home Premium."

2. The stupid one..... Okay now Dell took the Wine (Windows compatibility app) out of the Ubuntu they are pre-installing. The stupid thing is in the configuration area for the UBUNTU LINUX desktop they are offering to sell you Quicken Home & Business a *Windows* ONLY application!

Either leave the Wine app in or keep the Windows software out of the things you are trying to sell us when we are configuring NON-Windows systems.

Update drivers more often. By laxmanb,  Dec 31, 2007

Dell hasn't updated drivers for the ATi Mobility Radeon in my notebook for 7 months. Since ATi, Nvidia, and most other manufacturers release new drivers on a regular basis to OEMs (once every month), And the early Vista drivers are buggy (my display driver stops working at times after hibernating), Couldn't you just post them onto your Drivers and Downloads page on a regular basis?

Improve Web Site Photos of Products By kenjennings,  May 16, 2007

The product photos on the Dell web site are dismal, boring, and dull to the point of detracting from the products. My wife's Inspiron laptop arrived yesterday and it looks magnificent in real life -- nothing like web site pictures. I actually looked up the laptop on the web site again to make sure she wasn't mistakenly shipped the wrong model.

Whoever does this -- marketing,PR, IT -- needs to get a better camera or maybe some photography and art design courses. The real life Inspiron looks slick, pearly, and lustrous while the web site's photos look like flat, grey, plastic.

Your "Help Me Choose: Operating System" page lies about XP vs Vista performance. By jmxz,  Jun 8, 2007

This page titled "Help Me Choose: Operating System" misleads your customers about XP vs Vista performance.

this is the link to the page
Windows Vista Difference
Offers improved performance and increased reliability

On just about every benchmark tested; with both ATI and NVidia drivers and hardware, XP outperforms Vista. (for the dup police - these are not the same charts previously posted -- this is a new article testing both ATI and retesting NVidia with newer drivers based on feedback that people feared the old drivers might have caused the Vista slowdowns. No such luck, Vista is still slower even with new drivers and new hardware).

Here's a new benchmark this week:
http://enthusiast.hardocp.com/article.html?art=MTM0NywxLCxoZW50aHVzaWFzdA==

Earlier you fixed a different XP vs Vista page so it no longer says Vista offers better performance: http://ideastorm.com/article/show/66173 but the misleading information still exists on the "Help Me Choose: Operating System" so you should probably fix it too before misleading more customers.

Standardized Full Spec Sheet for all computers By blackbelt,  Jul 12, 2007

Please standardize the specification sheet available on the website, please include it in an easy access PDF format instead of having to wade through flash advertising copy and include DETAILED information such as motherboard chipset/manufacturer, CPU details, RAM specs (cache, latency etc) and manufacturer, sound chipset, bios, hard drive type/speed/manufacturer, number of fans & sizes, case construction materials, etc. I don't like buying a computer where most of the parts are a mystery.
Sure not everyone needs to know, but for the geeks it is important information to determine the quality of the build.

System Update By ahazan,  Feb 9, 2008

Crrently in Dell software & driver support dell takes your system tag and shows all available drivers and software for all peripherals that were offered on that system. that could mean 5 video cards 3 wireless nics, 4 CDR drives. It should be more like windows update or Lenovo thinkvanatge system update where it detects what hardware you have (or looks up what was shipped by service tag) and offers you only software and drivers for WHAT YOU HAVE. and also only offers drivers newer than what's currently installed

Make resource cd's downloadable By bcrouc,  Apr 1, 2009

Why doesn't Dell post the resource cd's on the download page?  I am working on a Dimension 8400 that did not come with a resource cd and the utility disk is gone.  Since the warranty is up, there is no way to contact Dell to request the cd without paying more money to use the computer that is rightfully mine.  And if I did do that, I'm sure I would have to pay $19 to get it.  It is now a very tall paper weight.  Makes me want to build my next machine rather than feed the dell machine.

A simple "Why Ubuntu?" webpage on your site that's easily accessible By benjesuit,  Jun 25, 2007

A webpage that lists all the merits and capabilities of Ubuntu called "Why Ubuntu?" To help consumers at least get a better understanding of it.

It should include:

- screen shots of Ubuntu.

- All the software (especially open office, firefox, evolution, gimp, rythmbox,F-spot) included w/ popup links to screen shots

- Popup of repository of software available.
- List of third party commercial software available
- Highlight of Codeweavers Crossover (allows many MS apps to run under Linux)

C'mon Dell, give Ubuntu the old college try.
