new inspiron 13 By onyxtortuga,  Aug 4, 2009  |    Tue Aug 04 23:09:52 GMT 2009

I would really like to purchase the new inspiron 13 but i hate the lack of different colors to choose from. I will not buy this computer until it is available in different colors. I don't want to put a skin on it and ruin it. i like the new quality look a computer has when youv just bought it. I think dell should make the new inspiron 13 in at least a few different colors like the minis, i'm sure there are many out there who feel the same way.

Use GDDR3 memory instead of DDR2 for ATI HD4330 By q0987,  Aug 4, 2009  |    Tue Aug 04 13:23:11 GMT 2009

Dell has recently started releasing Inspiron notebooks (13, 14, 17) with a single discrete graphics card option, the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4330.

However, these cards are significantly underpowered as they are configured with DDR2 memory modules instead of the faster GDDR3.

They are also taking advantage of the average consumer's 'MORE IS BETTER' mentality by providing 512MB of DDR2 memory even though the card uses a 64-bit memory bus and it is very likely that they will hit a bottleneck before they begin to even use half of it. And please don't hide these specifications under your 'Tech Specs' tab on each product.

I would take 256MB of GDDR3 over 512MB of DDR2 any day. Especially on this low-end card where it is really needed (and anyone who knows about GPUs would agree, DDR2 is woefully inadequate).

It seems this issue was brought up previously in 2007 but it looks like Dell has yet to provide some form of feedback. At least give us the option of a GGDR3-configured graphics card! This card really needs it, I can't stress that enough.

---------------------------------------------

On a side note, Dell should update these graphics card options with newer 40nm parts as soon as they are released (such as the G210m, Park XT) - offering GDDR3/GDDR5 options where available.
It would not require a new chassis design, as they are compatible with current slots, so you don't have to wait for Calpella/Arrandale in Q1 2010.

Inspiron Line Needs Improvements!!!!!!!!! By UltimateGamer,  Aug 2, 2009  |    Mon Aug 03 01:02:16 GMT 2009

Despite the fact that the Inspiron line has changed so much over the past few years, there are still significant improvements that need to be made in order to keep consumer interest in the product. Here is a list of improvements that "Everyone" would like to see in the Inspiron line. I'll go through each Inspiron model individually.

Complaints

Processor: Dell should discontinue the celeron processors in its Inspiron line. The celeron processors are cheap and a disgrace to have in a notebook which has so much potential as the Inspiron. The Inspiron processor should "at the very least" start at the Pentium-Dual core. It would be so much nicer to have a Intel Core 2 Duo processor standard in the Inspiron. In Addition, Dell should offer some AMD processors in its inspiron line as well. AMD processors would fit the Inspiron nicely, because just like AMD, the Inspiron is all about Value or "best bang for the buck" I should say. Also, Dell should trim the cost of Processor upgrades. There is almost nothing that customers hate more than having to worry about the cost of upgrading their CPU.

Memory: Upgading RAM is literally the simplest upgrade that anyone can perform on a laptop. Dell NEEDS to make its memory upgrades cheaper. Honestly, why should customers pay $75 for 4GB of RAM at Dell, when Newegg.com charges just $50 for the same thing. This also goes for 3GB of RAM.

Graphics: Dell NEEDS to have dedicated graphics available and affordable on all Inspiron Models. ATI would be the best choice because their chips are cheaper than Nvidia. ATI's chips also have arguably better performance.

Battery: Dell NEEDS to make a 6-cell battery standard for all its Inspiron laptops except for the netbooks.

Hard Drive: The year is 2009 and most notebooks still don't have 7200 RPM hard drives. Dell NEEDS to have 7200 RPM hard drives available in all of its notebooks in order to make it stand out from other laptop manufacturers. Western Digital should be a primary choice for Dell.

THE CHECKLIST:

Inspiron 13

Battery: Make a 6-cell battery standard.

Processor: Start with at least a Pentium Dual-core (A Core 2 Duo would be nicer) / AMD equivalent. Also, make processor upgrades cheaper.

Memory: Make memory upgrades cheaper.

Graphics: Please have dedicated graphics options available. such as an ATI mobility Radeon HD4330.

Hard Drive:
Please have 7200 RPM hard drives available.

Inspiron 14

Battery: Make a 6-cell battery standard.

Processor: Start with at least a Core 2 Duo / AMD equivalent. Make processor upgrades cheaper.

Memory: Make memory upgrades cheaper.

Graphics: Please have dedicated graphics options available. I think perhaps a 9400m/ 9500m.

Hard Drive:
Please have 7200 RPM hard drives available.

Inspiron 15

Battery: Make a 6-cell battery standard.

Processor: Start with at least a Pentium Dual-core (A Core 2 Duo would be nicer) / AMD equivalent. Also, make processor upgrades cheaper.

Memory: Make memory upgrades cheaper.

Graphics: Please have dedicated graphics options available. The ATi HD 4530 / 4570 would fit well here.

Hard Drive:
Please have 7200 RPM hard drives available.

Inspiron 17

Battery: Make a 6-cell battery standard.

Processor: Start with at least a Core 2 Duo / AMD equivalent. Also, make processor upgrades cheaper.

Memory: Make memory upgrades cheaper.

Graphics: Please have dedicated graphics options available. The ATi HD 4570/ 4650 or Geforce 105m would fit well here.

Hard Drive:
Please have 7200 RPM hard drives available.

THANKS! AND EVERYONE PLEASE PROMOTE THIS!

Dell Design Studio for Inspiron 17 Laptop By iamnotjamesh,  Jul 29, 2009  |    Wed Jul 29 20:29:41 GMT 2009

Dell Inspiron 17 should also get personalization with the design studio like with Inspiron 15, Studio 15, and Studio 17.  and add in the other studio and inspiron laptops into the mix as well.

Promote Please! More Personalization choices for more laptops!

What happened to the Inspiron 537 midtower desktop? By iamnotjamesh,  Jul 23, 2009  |    Fri Jul 24 00:15:59 GMT 2009

What happened to the Inspiron 537 midtower desktop?  Why was it replaced by a amd powered twin...can't you sell both types? and why does the slim desktop 537s get to stay.?  how come there isn't a new slim 537s with amd but an old 531s with amd?

why is inspiron desktop line so confusingly modeled?  makes no sense.  Dell fix this mess up,  have four models using the new design model 537 (2 slims - intel and amd, 2 regular - intel and amd)

RIght now the models are like this:
Slims:
- Intel (new design)
- AMD (old design)

Desktop:
- Intel (old design --now removed--)
- AMD (new design)

Dial up modem for Dell Inspiron 15 By guitarmaster,  Jul 16, 2009  |    Thu Jul 16 21:58:19 GMT 2009

I think that the Inspiron 15 should have an option to add an internal dial up modem for people that need that for home, instead of having to buy an external modem

No 16:9 aspect ratio on the new Inspiron 17, please By winoffice,  Jul 16, 2009  |    Thu Jul 16 21:09:51 GMT 2009

http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/16/dell-adds-inspiron-17-laptop-to-its-lineup/
http://www.dell.com/us/en/home/notebooks/laptop-inspiron-17/pd.aspx?refid=laptop-inspiron-17&s=dhs&cs=19

Engadget is reporting that Dell is to add a 17.3" notebook to the Inspiron line. I appreciate the low starting price ($499!), but the 16:9 aspect ratio for the display is a dealbreaker.

http://www.ideastorm.com/ideaView?id=087700000000TXwAAM

See the above link for why I dislike the 16:9 aspect ratio.

Instead of 16:9, Dell should offer a 16:10 aspect ratio for the display, with options for 1440x900 and 1920x1200.

There are also many contradictions between the "tech specs" and actual configuration. For example, the tech specs state that the built in camera is optional, though the actual configuration suggests otherwise. The configuration allows only for Intel integrated graphics, but the tech specs claim that dedicated graphics options are available. The OS options according to the tech specs are 64 bit Home Premium and Ultimate, though the actual configuration allows only Home Basic and 64 bit Home Premium (the former apparently not 64 bit). 32 bit Home Premium and Ultimate should also be offered.

Also something that I would like to see is an option for a silver lid/badge, though that is not so important.

Ideal Dell Laptop By Sathe,  Jul 16, 2009  |    Thu Jul 16 18:55:06 GMT 2009

I would love to have a  Dell Inspiron laptop with the following configuration

Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad
Memory : DDR3 Triple channel (6GB atleast)
Graphics: Nvidia with atleast 1 GB DDR3
Hard Drive : 500GB 7200 RPM
Display : 1920x1080 or WUXGA with true life
Battery: 9 cell
Keyboard: backlight soft key pads
Wifi: Intel 5100
USB: atleast 6 USB slots
HDMI: Atleast one HDMI interfact
Audio: Optical and Coaxial outputs with built in Creative X-fi chipset

Nowadays we cant use laptop in our lap because of heat. Dell should work on this for better use of laptop in our lap. IBM thinkpad is better in this.

please do one of two things: either make the inspiron 13 with a better graphics card option (a gma 4500x at least) or make the inspiron 14 and 15 un-hideous. thank you.

300 W power supplies in desktop computers is not enough By brooke618,  May 16, 2009  |    Sun May 17 05:17:38 GMT 2009

I have owned Dell computers since the PC's Limited Turbo PC back in the 1980's.  My company has purchased hundreds of Dells over the past several years.  I am a Dell advocate to gaming groups.

However, a recent trend is causing me trouble in recommending Dell's.  Many desktops (such as Inspiron and Vostro), have only 300 W power supplies.  Even the older Dimension 9200 had a 375 W power supply.  300 W is insufficient for many modern graphics cards.

I urge you to increase the capability of power supplies in your Inspiron and Vostro systems to 400 W or more, or perhaps provide an option for higher-power supplies at increased cost.

For a home machine, I can take the trouble to replace the power supply with a more-capable one.  But we can't do that for work computers -- it's too labor intensive.

Entire selection of colors for Inspiron laptop line By iamnotjamesh,  May 12, 2009  |    Tue May 12 23:17:28 GMT 2009

I've noticed dell finally decided to add some "good" looking colors but not as much as before.  Instead, in the color customization screen, they promote users to toss some more bucks for the expensiver and nicer looking studio line.  Dell could easily have studio laptop colors for the inspiron line.  It doesn't cost much, and if they fear it will lose business in the studio line, then charge a little more for the premium "studio colors".  The inspiron 15 has some more colors but the 13 has only one color, so fix that too.  And inspiron 14 is outdated, update it and make it look the same as the others in the line.  Also, bring back a low-end inspiron 17 laptop.  It's only offered in studio now.  And the studio 17 should have been updated with the same design as the new studio 15.  Update colors and laptops.  Offer more variety and price levels!!

I've been a dell enthusiast for over 6 years and they should update this, don't deter cost-concious consumers and have them go to rivals like hp, which offers all features at all price lines.  Thank you!  promote please!

Return ability to customise to Inspiron line By khensthoth,  Apr 12, 2009  |    Sun Apr 12 13:38:43 GMT 2009

Recently I noticed some branding changes with the Inspiron line: Dell has introduced the Inspiron 14 and Inspiron 15 naming system. Undoubtedly, this will increase the brand recognition of Inspiron laptops among consumers.

However, with that naming change, Inspiron 14 and 15 has lose their ability to be customised, particularly in Asian contries like Malaysia and Singapore. Consumers are no longer able to select how much memory, how much disk space, and what colours they wanted. Apart from the Warranty and Services, every Inspiron 14 and 15 now sold is totally identicle.

See the Malaysian Inspiron 14 and Inspiron 15 page, and compare this to the USA Inspiron 14 and Inspiron 15 page. The USA page retains the the customisability, down to the colours and processor speed. The Malaysian version has all but lost what is essential to Dell - customisability. A check with the Singapore version reveals the same lost of customisability.

I have been a steady customer of Dell for at least 10 years, and have bought at least 3 Desktops and 2 Laptops with Dell over the years. The reason I chose Dell every time was their customisability.

With the new changes introduced in Dell Malaysia, I no longer have any reason to pick Dell over any other brand. Thus, please retain the customisability that Dell is famous with in Dell Malaysia.

I am sure you will make a lot of Asian customers very happy.

Use The Studio XPS Design On Models In Inspiron Line. By James.Hardin,  Mar 27, 2009  |    Fri Mar 27 22:00:34 GMT 2009

Briefly would like to give my opinion of what the Inspirion line should look like.  I was recently browsing the Dell website, and noticed the Studio XPS 13.  When I noticed this notebook it really caught my attention. Its a very sleek, sexy, appealing design. It got me to thinking that most people I see with Dell computers are Insprions, esspecially amoung the college level. I feel that the design of the Studio XPS should be used on the Inspiron as well, perhaps give it a few modification to differinciate between the 2 models. When I noticed the attractive look of the Studio XPS 13, it made me think of my Blackberry Bold, It has a leatherish backings, with stainless steal shine looks, and very bold gloss shine to it.  Inspirions in my opinon out of all the laptops Dell has out, is the best seller due to the number of people I see with them. But it is also in my opinion that the current design is Dull, and Boring. Ive noticed the Inspiron 15 (the newest insprion) and Its still not grabbing my attention as much as that Studio XPS is.  I person perfer the Inpiron notebooks. Ive been with deal for quite some time as a customer and to see such a product like the Studio XPS 13 really made me have to give a 2 thumbs up for it.  Currently I would have to say if Dell would incorporate almost same design (esspecially the LCD Hood cover) into the Insprion, it would take off.. Inspirions are cheap, reliable, and great computers. They could use a more stylish look. But right now with the current design if I had to choose between Dell and HP computers, It would have to be HP due to the fact of the sleek, sexy and appealing designs they offer. Dell should defintely consider using the Studio XPS look on other models..

no more linux 1525's By donlinux,  Mar 23, 2009  |    Mon Mar 23 20:19:36 GMT 2009

a great workhorse laptop, the Inspiron 1525 is no longer available with linux.  Only Windoze Vista.  It's a shame to not offer this great computer with linux any longer.  I have purchased and had my associates purchase 7 Inspirons and a couple of mini 9's.  I would like to be able to continue to recommend Dell as an open source friendly company but don't want to be pushed to a higher priced laptop or forced into a netbook.
